Discover Tomintoul: Speyside’s Gentle Dram

At Boisdale’s online shop, we are proud to showcase Tomintoul Distillery, renowned for producing some of the smoothest and most elegant single malt Scotch whiskies in Speyside. Established in 1965, Tomintoul has earned the moniker “The Gentle Dram” for its refined and approachable expressions that capture the essence of Speyside whisky-making.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Founded by whisky brokers Hay & Macleod and W. & S. Strong, Tomintoul Distillery began production in 1965 near the village of Tomintoul, Scotland's highest village. The distillery was designed to meet the growing demand for malt whisky during the 1960s. In 2000, Tomintoul was acquired by Angus Dundee Distillers, who continue to uphold the distillery's commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Over the years, Tomintoul has expanded its range to include various age statements and finishes, earning accolades for its consistency and elegance.

The Distillery and Terroir

Located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Tomintoul Distillery benefits from the pristine waters of the Ballantruan Spring. This natural resource, combined with traditional distilling methods, contributes to the distinctive character of Tomintoul whiskies. The distillery operates with a capacity of 3.3 million litres of pure alcohol per year, utilizing two wash stills and two spirit stills, all steam-heated. The surrounding environment and water source play a crucial role in shaping the delicate and smooth profile of Tomintoul whiskies.

Signature Tasting Notes

Tomintoul whiskies are celebrated for their smoothness and complexity. Typical tasting profiles include:

  • Tomintoul 10 Year Old: Light and floral with hints of vanilla, honey, and a touch of malt sweetness. A gentle introduction to the Tomintoul range.
  • Tomintoul 16 Year Old: Richer with notes of honey, nuts, vanilla, and a hint of citrus. Smooth and mellow, with a long, warming finish.
  • Tomintoul 21 Year Old: Deep and complex with flavors of caramel, toffee, and butterscotch, complemented by subtle baking spices and a touch of oak.
  • Tomintoul 33 Year Old: A rare and refined expression with layers of dried fruits, nuts, and a gentle spice, offering a luxurious tasting experience.
  • Tomintoul Peated: A unique offering from a traditionally unpeated distillery, featuring sweet and sooty aromas of campfire smoke, ginger biscuits, and roasted meats, with layers of hazelnut, smoky bacon, and treacle toffees on the palate.
